I'm Amanda, a certified personal trainer. I started my wellness and fitness journey during university; I would ride the stationary bicycle for 20 minutes 4 days a week, had no concept of balanced eating or what a healthy relationship with food was, and my mental health was non-existent. Over the years, I learned how to properly use weights and the benefits of them, my relationship with food improved, and my body composition began to change. At that point, my ideal picture of fitness was the bronzed, abs-for-days, Instagram models, and I thought I had to look like them to be my happiest and healthiest self. Every time I looked in the mirror and didn’t see that, I would get so distraught and unhappy with my body. I didn’t recognize or appreciate how far I had come and how much my body did for me every single day. My mental health was still not great, and I struggled to connect with myself.
Fast forward 5 years later, and my perspective on fitness has changed. I no longer care about I “should” look, and more about how I want to feel in my mind and body. I want to feel strong, energetic, happy, healthy, and relaxed. I want to move in a way that feels enjoyable and sustainable for my lifestyle, instead of copying someone else’s routine based on what they enjoy doing.
I listen to my mind and body every day, and focus on what my needs are in order to feel my best self. This is not an easy process, but it is a worthwhile one. It took a few years of trial and error, but I have finally found an approach that works for me; I bloomed into who and what I wanted to be.
I cannot wait to join you as you bloom into your own wellness and fitness journey.
Besides my personal training certification, I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child and Youth Care, as well as a post-graduate certification in Addictions and Mental Health. Both my degree and certificate have taught me the importance of an integrative and psychosocial approach when it comes to program planning and assessing and achieving goals. This background has also taught me to be mindful of the language I use; I think all too often within the fitness industry we see words, and descriptions of those words that are not friendly or inviting to everyone that wants to engage with fitness. Along with that comes mindset; the way we look at something influences how we engage and represent it. When it comes to fitness, I want to use language that is inclusive and mindful, and be a safe space that is welcoming to anyone who wants to improve their health and wellness.
